Corfu (Kérkyra) is situated off the northwest coast of mainland Greece, where the Adriatic meets the Ionian sea, making it the closest Greek island to Italy. Although not the largest of the Ionian islands, it has long been the cultural centre of the group, historically having a long association with the Venetians and British. Corfu has some of the best beaches in the archipelago (33 awarded blue flags in 2002) with idyllic bays and a lush green ‘delectable landscape’ according to once long-term resident Lawrence Durrell. It is an island of contrasts, with spectacular verdant mountains, wild flowers, towering cliffs and beautiful sheltered bays. Corfu Town is one of the most elegant island capitals in Greece, with an impressive range of cultural attractions, and with easy transport links to the BlueGreen Corfu development which is about 16km west of Corfu Town.
